Authority and biased decision-making
Recently, I gave a talk at a local dev club about the biases that come with career growth and even being an expert. The overarching idea is to get people to think critically about their decisions:
- If you are an expert, you can be overconfident.
- Statistically, people with high power (authority) are likely to ignore expert advice (e.g., invite a consultant and reject his advice as inapplicable to their business).
- Formal power (that comes with a title, company hierarchy) suppresses direct voices during a joint meeting (have you noticed that people with authority are likely to be talkative in meetings).
The talk is not only about biases, but also about ways and solutions to apply critical thinking and reduce the biases.
